I can still remember my first yoga class back in 1996. I left the class feeling like someone had cast a spell on me! My body felt strong and supple, my mind clear and free from worries; I glided back home knowing that I had discovered something very special! Now, it feels strange when I say my job is a yoga teacher! It really doesn’t feel like a job – it’s my passion, and I’m very lucky that the two intertwine.
Studying yoga took me on an amazing journey of self-discovery, and deep into the philosophical teachings of the ancient yogis. I became very familiar with anatomy and physiology (a great love of mine), and how yoga can influence not only our physical bodies, providing strength, stamina and flexibility, but also how it can affect the mind and emotions.
My extended study and practice of yoga has greatly influenced my life, changing it for the better. I am stronger and fitter now than I was in my twenties, and I have a much greater understanding of what causes stress in my body and mind, and how to deal with it. I am calmer, more easy-going, optimistic and content. I would like to think my approach to life is reflected in my classes. I like to teach all aspects of yoga – mindfulness, breath awareness, meditation, relaxation, as well as asana (the physical side!)
I firmly believe that yoga is for everyone. I am so happy to welcome people from all walks of life, with their own individual body types and fitness levels, and do my best to accommodate them. I like to focus on alignment (meaning that the yoga poses are safe) and self-contemplation. I try to make sure that every student can get the best out each pose – this often means teaching in stages so the students can tailor their practise to suit their body, without feeling inadequate or pushing themselves too far. It’s great when people can leave their insecurities at the door and come into a class knowing that whatever they do is their best on that particular day – there is no competition with anyone else, or with themselves.
Hidden away at the bottom of the garden in the quiet village of Bettisfield, Ginger Yoga Yurt is a 22 foot bespoke yurt made by the local Telford based company ‘Yurt Maker’. It is surprisingly spacious inside, helped by the higher walls and ceiling (you can easily stand up around the edges which is unusual for a yurt!), and feels incredibly peaceful and calming as you enter. It is a wonderful space for a smaller, friendly classes. Glorious daylight streams in through the beautiful skylight, and on a clear night you can look up and view the stars whilst relaxing in savasana! In the colder months, participants are treated to the luxurious warmth of the underfloor heating and a log burner (a fireguard is used for the Mum & Baby classes). The yurt also has an adjoining entrance room, where you can hang up your coat and store your shoes. This space also houses a variety of yoga equipment for you to use, such as yoga bricks, bolsters and blankets, as well as a large selection of books for you to peruse through if you wish. There is a (nicer than you expect!) composting toilet and hand washing facilities, and an area for making hot and cold drinks for the Qigong & a Cuppa, Mum & Baby Yoga and Menopause Yoga classes, and also the Women’s Circles and the Positive Birthing Workshop. Free parking is available.
"Having spent a wonderfully relaxing Saturday with a small group led by Gail in her yurt I have to give a 5 star review. Every little detail was considered from how the yurt was set out for our yoga sessions to the delicious home-made lunch and cakes! Would definitely recommend."
